How the Engineering Program Finder Works
You don’t need a shortlist yet. Tell the engineering program finder which field you want, the degree you’re after and how you’d like to study, and it does the comparing for you across 260 schools.
You Answer Seven Questions
Your field, degree level, online or campus, where you live, the career you picture, what matters most and anything else worth knowing.
We Compare 585 Programs
The program finder keeps the ranked programs at your degree level, in your field and format, then reads each one’s write-up against your answers.
You Get Five Matches
Each match shows a match percentage, the school’s published tuition, its place in our rankings and a link to its full review.
What Our Engineering Program Finder Looks At
Your Engineering Field
219 mechanical, 205 electrical and 161 general engineering programs, each ranked within its own field.
The Degree You Want
303 bachelor’s, 141 master’s and 141 doctoral programs. Your level is never swapped for another.
Online or on Campus
29 master’s, 7 doctoral and 7 bachelor’s programs have an online route. The rest are campus programs.
The Career You Picture
254 programs go deep on computing, 44 on aerospace, 118 on biomedical work and 62 on civil or structural work.
What Matters to You
Low tuition, ABET accreditation (232 bachelor’s programs), co-ops (93 bachelor’s programs) and graduate funding (218 programs) all change which programs rise.
Where You Live
Programs in 50 states and the District of Columbia. Pick your state and the program finder favors schools near you.
Tuition appears exactly as each school publishes it, per term, per credit or per year. When you pick Low tuition, the program finder compares the figures it can put on a yearly basis and leaves per-credit rates neutral.
Which Engineering Degree Fits the Career You Want?
Our rankings cover general, mechanical and electrical engineering at three degree levels. The career you have in mind decides which of those fields, and which programs inside it, you should look at first.
Mechanical or Aerospace Engineer
Mechanical engineering covers machines, energy and manufacturing, and it’s a common route into aerospace work. 44 programs in our data offer aerospace study, 29 of them mechanical. Start with our mechanical engineering rankings, or the mechanical engineering co-op rankings if you want paid work terms built in.
Electrical or Computer Engineer
Electrical engineering runs from power grids to chips, and many schools fold computer engineering into it. 254 programs in our data go deep on computing, like embedded systems or computer architecture. Compare the electrical engineering rankings, or the power systems master’s rankings for grid work.
Civil, Structural or Biomedical Engineer
A general engineering degree lets you build your own focus. 62 general engineering programs in our data include civil, structural or environmental study, and 118 programs across all three fields include biomedical work. Our general engineering rankings show how each one is set up.
Professional Engineer (PE) License
A PE license combines education, qualifying experience and exams, and each state sets its own path, as NCEES explains. Pick the PE license goal and the program finder gives extra weight to the 232 bachelor’s programs that state ABET accreditation. Our engineering accreditation guide and FE exam guide cover the rest.
Engineering Manager
Most engineering managers start out doing technical work and move up. If that’s your plan, look for a master’s you can take while you work. 11 master’s programs in our data are fully online. Say so in question five and the program finder weighs programs that build leadership into their courses.
Researcher or Professor
Research careers usually run through a doctorate. 218 of our 282 graduate programs describe assistantships or fellowships, and you can ask for that in question six. Compare the mechanical engineering doctoral rankings and the electrical engineering master’s rankings to see how research routes differ.
Using the Program Finder to Find an Online Engineering Degree
Online engineering is mostly a graduate option. 29 of our 141 master’s programs have an online route, and 11 of those are online only. At the bachelor’s level it’s 7 of 303, because required labs keep most degrees on campus.
If you pick Online and fewer than five programs fit, the engineering program finder shows close matches and says which answer each one misses. The online master’s in engineering rankings and online electrical engineering master’s rankings list the full field.
Engineering Program Finder FAQ
How Does the Engineering Program Finder Work?
You answer seven questions: your field, the degree you want, online or campus, your state, the career you picture, what matters most and anything else worth knowing. The engineering program finder narrows our 585 ranked programs to the ones that fit, reads each program’s write-up against your answers and shows you the five that fit best.
How Is My Match Percentage Worked Out?
Your match percentage shows how closely a program fits what you told us, from its write-up (courses, concentrations, research, design work) and its facts (format, published tuition, ABET status, where it sits in our rankings). It compares programs for you. It is not a grade of the school.
Do Schools Pay to Appear in My Results?
Not in your matches. The listing at the top of your results is marked AD and comes from schools that pay to appear there. Your five matches below it come from our own rankings data, and no school can pay to change them.
Can I Find an Online Engineering Degree With the Program Finder?
Yes, pick Online in question three. Most online options are graduate degrees: 29 master’s programs in our data have an online route, against 7 bachelor’s programs. Our online ABET-accredited engineering degree report goes deeper on the bachelor’s side.
What If I Don’t Know Which Engineering Field I Want?
Choose Not Sure Yet in question one. The program finder then searches general, mechanical and electrical engineering together and uses the careers you pick to lean toward a field. Our mechanical vs. electrical engineering guide helps if you are torn between those two.
Why Do Some Results Say They Differ From My Answers?
When fewer than five programs fit every answer, the program finder lists those first, then adds close matches. Each close match misses exactly one answer, like the field or online study, and its card names it. Your degree level is never swapped.
Do I Need an Account or to Share My Contact Details?
No. The engineering program finder never asks for your name, email or phone number, and there is nothing to sign up for. Please leave contact details out of the optional text boxes.
