Stanford's electrical MS uses a defined depth-and-breadth structure within a largely individualized course plan. You'll complete twelve quarter units in one depth area, nine units outside that area, fifteen technical units and nine additional approved units. The five depth areas range from circuits and physical technology to communications, software/hardware systems, and signal processing with control and optimization. The standard degree is based on coursework and does not require a thesis. That makes it a strong program to examine when your goal is advanced technical practice and you already know which graduate courses support it.

Where it stands out

Stanford fits an applicant who wants to combine a specific electrical specialty with a documented breadth requirement and access to approved graduate technical courses. The course plan can connect devices, circuits, algorithms or systems, with a faculty program advisor helping you check prerequisites and the degree categories.

What to weigh

This is a terminal MS, so continuing to the PhD requires a separate application. Graduate engineering tuition is charged by quarter and enrollment band. Departmental assistantships for MS students are limited, with preference for doctoral students, and preparatory courses can increase the work beyond the forty-five-unit minimum.

  • The degree requires 45 quarter units:12 depth units, nine breadth units,15 technical units and nine additional approved units.
  • Depth courses must be at the 200 level or above, with at least six units at the 300 level or above. Breadth courses must come from outside the selected depth area.
  • The technical requirement includes at least nine units of 200-level or higher lecture courses. A program proposal is due by the end of the first quarter for regular full-time entrants.

  • Transfer applicants follow the regular admission process. Coursework from another institution cannot be transferred into the Stanford MS.

  • The standard MS has no thesis requirement. An approved plan can include independent study within the applicable limits.

The MSE is not the thesis-based electrical MS, and its portfolio draws on seminar attendance and review. Online students cannot choose the control-systems specialization. Admission remains competitive even when an applicant meets the stated GPA threshold, and course selection must satisfy the program's category and level limits.

Electrical depth and useful breadth

A strong graduate plan identifies the technical level, specialty requirements and approved study outside the primary area, rather than offering an unstructured set of electives.

A clear finishing requirement

A thesis, project, portfolio or course-only plan should be described accurately so applicants understand what work is required before graduation.

Format and financial fit

Online restrictions, course timing, graduate tuition categories and actual funding conditions affect whether an academically attractive program works for an individual student.

How electrical engineering master’s programs differ by award

An award abbreviation does not tell you the whole curriculum. Stanford’s MS has no standard thesis requirement. ASU’s professional MSE ends with a portfolio based on seminar attendance and review. Illinois’s MEng requires a professional-development component that can be a faculty-supervised master’s project or approved professional coursework. Each is a route to advanced electrical study, but the final work differs.

Purdue’s reviewed MSECE thesis option requires six to twelve research credits within a thirty-credit degree. Iowa and Georgia Tech offer both thesis and non-thesis plans with different allocations of coursework and research. If you expect to seek doctoral admission, examine the research supervision and thesis opportunity directly. A course-based MS should not be assumed to include a thesis, and a master’s admission should not be assumed to provide automatic entry to that university’s PhD.

How electrical engineering master’s programs organize technical study

Stanford divides its standard forty-five quarter units into depth, breadth, technical and additional-course categories. At least six depth units must be at the 300 level or above. Illinois requires at least eighteen ECE credits, with fifteen drawn from no more than three focus areas. These requirements help you test a proposed course list before deciding that a program has enough work in a particular specialty.

Other details can change an apparent credit comparison. NC State requires thirty-one credits, including its mandatory first-semester orientation. Iowa’s degree requirement is thirty semester hours, but the required one-credit engineering ethics course sits outside that total. Stanford’s quarter units also use a different academic calendar from the semester credits at the other reviewed institutions. Compare the course sequence and finishing requirements before treating the smallest number as the fastest degree.

Which electrical engineering master’s programs offer online study?

Illinois, NC State, Arizona State and Michigan Tech have documented online routes in this selection. Their flexibility has specific boundaries. Illinois describes asynchronous coursework and optional campus visits. NC State uses recorded campus lectures but keeps the semester assignment and exam schedule, with proctored exams. Full-time employed NC State students can take at most two online courses per semester, and the program recommends one course in the first semester.

ASU’s control-systems specialization is available on campus but is not an online option. Michigan Tech’s online focus emphasizes power systems and uses the campus syllabus and schedule. Before applying, identify the courses available in the intended format and how the culminating work is completed. Graduate electrical engineering tuition and funding

Stanford’s 2026–27 engineering rate is $15,100 per quarter at eight to ten units. Georgia Tech’s Atlanta MS ECE rate is $8,528 resident tuition per full-time semester, before the published campus fees and other expenses. NC State’s resident campus electrical MS tuition and listed fees total $9,682.25 per semester at nine or more credits. These figures have different periods and coverage, so they should be read with each review’s complete billing basis.

Funding also depends on the award and degree route. Illinois’s professional MEng is ineligible for tuition-waiver-generating assistantships. Stanford gives doctoral students priority for limited departmental assistantships, and Georgia Tech tells master’s students to have an alternative funding plan. Purdue offers competitive research and teaching appointments with stated benefits, but an admission offer alone does not guarantee one.
