Start with the required courses in the final two years. A broad degree can still be highly structured: Harvey Mudd's requirements connect engineering science, systems analysis and an extended Clinic sequence. At Olin, Engineering students use a faculty-advised concentration to organize their advanced study. These are different ways to develop an engineer who can work across technical boundaries.

Compare the courses you would actually take, the decisions you can make, and the project you would complete. A concentration name is most useful when you can trace it to a specific sequence of technical work. Pay attention to which laboratories are built into required courses and which experiences depend on a particular elective or project choice.

Choose the depth you want in a general engineering degree

An interest in robotics might lead you toward software and embedded systems, mechanical dynamics, or control systems. Seattle Pacific's general engineering catalog illustrates this choice with separate electrical and mechanical robotics-and-controls emphases. Read both before deciding which matches your interests.

If your preferred courses consistently fall within one established discipline, also review the mechanical engineering programs and electrical engineering programs. The comparison helps you decide how much shared engineering study you want alongside the subject you expect to practice. Compare how much of the proposed plan is fixed and how much depends on electives that need your adviser's approval.

Check admission to the general engineering degree

College admission and admission to an engineering major can involve separate decisions. JMU's catalog describes prerequisites, an application and possible capacity limits before full admission to its major. Swarthmore normally reviews engineering-major applications in sophomore spring, with coursework and grade expectations.

Put that entry point on your proposed schedule. Transfer students should also have their actual courses evaluated against the engineering sequence. An accepted transfer course can satisfy one requirement while leaving a laboratory or prerequisite sequence to complete.

Is general engineering a real bachelor's degree?

Yes. Schools including Swarthmore, Olin and Wake Forest award a bachelor's in Engineering as a complete major. Seattle Pacific uses the title B.S. in General Engineering. Does a concentration change the degree title?

That depends on the university. Wake Forest's catalog explicitly states that a concentration does not change its B.S. in Engineering. Calvin similarly identifies one B.S.E. with several concentrations. Check both the awarded degree and how the concentration appears in your academic record.
