The program deserves attention if you want a coherent course sequence in mechatronics, product realization or another defined mechanical area. The degree is non-thesis, incoming assistantships are rare, and applicants who already hold or are pursuing a closely related master’s are ineligible. Quarter-unit totals and tuition brackets also differ from semester systems. Build the cost around your actual course load, rather than multiplying a semester-school price by Stanford’s forty-five units.
The non-thesis MS requires two mathematics courses covering different approved areas, a mechanical depth cluster of at least nine units, and two breadth courses outside that depth.

The Atlanta master’s program lists a minimum 3.3 GPA and a four-year US bachelor’s degree or equivalent; meeting those minimums does not guarantee admission.

UT Austin distinguishes the same broad choices through different totals: thirty credits with a thesis, thirty-three with a report and thirty-six with coursework alone. NC State’s non-thesis degree still requires a three-credit project within its thirty-credit plan. A non-thesis label therefore does not tell you whether the degree is entirely taught coursework. Specializations in master’s in mechanical engineering programs
Stanford’s current MS requirements define depth areas including mechatronics, manufacturing and product realization, automatic controls, robotics and kinematics, and thermal or fluid study. Depth is balanced with mathematics, breadth outside the chosen area and a graduate laboratory component. The mechatronics sequence is a connected set of smart-product courses, so one isolated course does not satisfy the depth requirement.

What supporting coursework belongs in a mechanical master’s?
Georgia Tech requires a coherent major area and a distinctly different minor area in both its thesis and non-thesis MSME. The minor is part of academic planning and does not appear as a separate credential on the degree documents. UT Austin also requires supporting study distinct from the major area. These rules make you explain how an additional technical subject improves the work at the center of your degree.
Mathematics has its own constraints. Purdue requires six applied-mathematics credits with at least three from the Mathematics Department. Stanford requires two approved mathematics courses covering different areas. Michigan retains six mathematics or equivalent credits across its three routes. Check the exact departmental rule before assuming that any quantitative engineering elective can fill a mathematics requirement.
Admission requirements for master’s in mechanical engineering programs
Testing requirements vary even among these eight programs. Michigan makes the GRE optional for Fall 2027 MSE applicants, while Stanford does not accept it for applications received through January 2027. Purdue and UT Austin use optional GRE policies, and Minnesota does not use GRE scores in its review. Follow the current instructions for the exact master’s application, especially when a department lists doctoral requirements on the same page.
Recommendations also differ. Michigan’s master’s application requires two, including one from an academic professor. Minnesota asks for three for the thesis route but one for coursework-only study. Stanford requires three and excludes applicants who already hold or are enrolled in a closely related master’s degree. NC State publishes a dedicated campus mechanical/aerospace graduate table: at nine or more credits, the reviewed semester total is $8,782.25 for residents or $19,750.75 for nonresidents, including the listed tuition increments and fees. Illinois lists annual Grainger graduate tuition separately from required fees.
