Best Electrical Engineering PhD Programs in 2026

The best electrical engineering PhD programs give a research question the right faculty, technical preparation and sustained support. Our 2026 ranking reviews eight doctoral programs across electrical engineering and the closely related ECE and EECS degree structures. Each assessment explains the course plan, research milestones, admissions route and a practical tradeoff.

In this ranking of electrical engineering PhD programs, MIT leads for its staged research training, technical qualification, teaching and professional-perspective requirements. Stanford follows for its advisor-centered research structure and explicit support policy; Berkeley adds a major-and-minors model with separate electrical engineering breadth. Michigan, Illinois, Georgia Tech, Purdue and UT Austin complete the selection with distinct ways to organize doctoral preparation and supervision.

How we ranked electrical engineering doctoral programs

These electrical engineering PhD programs are selected through current official doctoral requirements and department policies. ECE and EECS awards qualify through their electrical engineering research pathways. MIT also offers the ScD under its doctoral requirements. Our reviews assess the graduate program itself, including original research and examination obligations, rather than applying undergraduate admission rates or graduation statistics to doctoral quality.

The order of these electrical engineering PhD programs weighs research-training structure, usable technical breadth, the clarity of advisor and committee responsibilities, and financial planning. MIT, Stanford and Berkeley lead for particularly clear but different approaches to those priorities. Michigan and Illinois pair defined entry routes with published support commitments. Georgia Tech, Purdue and UT Austin offer substantial technical choice with explicit academic requirements. The order is an editorial assessment of these reviewed programs; a specific faculty match can change which is best for you.

Funding & assistantships

The admissions FAQ describes support through fellowships, research or teaching assistantships, covering tuition, a monthly living stipend and medical insurance. Continuing assistantship appointments depend on progress, performance and faculty resources; discuss renewal and summer coverage with the department and advisor.

University funding information

MIT leads our selection for the way its EECS doctorate makes research training visible from the beginning. Bachelor’s entrants first develop and complete an SM thesis, then demonstrate research readiness through the Research Qualifying Examination. Technical qualification separately tests breadth and depth through an approved course plan. The program also requires a minor, teaching and professional-perspective activities, giving future researchers practice beyond the dissertation itself. We value the explicit sequence from proposal to committee formation, recurring feedback and defense. Students arriving with an accepted master’s can move directly toward doctoral qualification, so the preparation route reflects work they have already completed.

Where it stands out

Consider MIT if you want a research-intensive electrical engineering path within a department that also spans computer science and AI. Your proposed work should connect clearly to faculty expertise and to the technical groups used in the qualification plan.

What to weigh

The academic milestones require sustained campus participation and strong course performance. Funding appointments also need active coordination after the first year. An outside master’s may satisfy that degree milestone, but individual unfinished graduate courses do not simply transfer into the MIT program.

Curriculum, admission & sources

What you’ll study

  • The Technical Qualifying Evaluation uses four approved subjects across three groups, with at least three A grades and one B. A separate two-subject minor broadens study beyond the research topic.
  • Bachelor’s entrants complete an SM thesis on the doctoral path. Applicants who already hold an accepted master’s can proceed directly toward the doctoral qualifiers.
  • Teaching and professional-perspective activities accompany technical study. The department assigns academic credit to milestones from the SM proposal through doctoral committee meetings.

Admission & progression

  • Applicants need a bachelor’s degree and strong preparation in mathematics, physics, computer science or engineering. Admission is to the doctoral program.
  • Submit transcripts, recommendations and the department’s application essays. The standard EECS doctoral application does not use GRE scores.
  • Faculty matching and support discussions follow admission. MIT accepts a completed outside master’s toward doctoral requirements but does not transfer unfinished coursework or research credits.

Research & project requirements

  • Complete the Research Qualifying Examination, which evaluates research ability and written and oral communication, then establish the doctoral committee and submit a thesis proposal.
  • Hold continuing committee meetings, finish original research and defend the doctoral thesis. MIT requires at least four terms of full-time residence.

Funding & assistantships

EE describes full support for PhD students making satisfactory academic progress. The usual pattern is a first-year departmental fellowship followed by an advisor’s research assistantship. The package includes full-time tuition support, a living stipend or salary and a 50% Cardinal Care premium subsidy; advisor funding and timely milestones remain conditions.

University funding information

Stanford places relatively compact graded coursework inside a much larger research degree. Its 21-unit lecture and laboratory requirement leaves considerable room for advisor-directed research, while second-year qualification and candidacy deadlines establish a firm early checkpoint. We give the program a high position for this combination and for its clearly explained support model. A typical first-year fellowship lets students explore research groups before the advisor becomes the main source of research assistantship funding. The department’s financial commitment comes with specific academic conditions, including progress, enrollment and a suitable advisor. The 135-unit total therefore needs to be read as a research-and-study framework, rather than a count of classroom credits.

Where it stands out

Stanford fits an applicant ready to pursue electrical engineering research full time and develop a close faculty relationship. Bachelor’s entrants can apply directly, and students with appropriate master’s work may request approved credit toward the total.

What to weigh

The PhD is exclusively full time, and students must secure an advisor and second reader to advance to candidacy. Typical completion is five to seven years. The health-insurance benefit is a premium subsidy, so the individual funding package deserves a careful budget review.

Attendance: The electrical engineering PhD is offered exclusively as a full-time program.

Curriculum, admission & sources

What you’ll study

  • The 135-quarter-unit degree includes EE 301 in the first autumn and 21 units of letter-graded STEM lecture or laboratory courses at the 200 level or above. Research, seminars and approved additional study fill the remaining units.
  • Up to 45 units from an eligible completed master’s may count toward the doctoral total with approval. A Stanford EE master’s can also be earned along the way through its separate requirements.
  • Pass the qualifying examination by the end of winter quarter in the second year and advance to candidacy by the end of that year with a dissertation advisor and second reader.

Admission & progression

  • A bachelor’s degree is sufficient for application. Strong technical backgrounds in engineering, physical sciences or mathematics are eligible; an electrical engineering bachelor’s is not compulsory.
  • Admission is for autumn entry. Applicants choose the PhD directly when that is their intended degree; an unsuccessful PhD application does not transfer into the MS pool.
  • Faculty contact is optional and does not determine admission. The department reviews the full application without a published minimum GPA.

Research & project requirements

  • Form a dissertation reading committee of at least three members in the third year, including two full or joint EE faculty members.
  • Complete a significant original research contribution, the university oral examination and an approved written dissertation. The oral examination serves as the dissertation defense.

Funding & assistantships

The department states that all incoming MS/PhD and PhD students are offered support. Applicants are considered for fellowships, research appointments and teaching appointments, with the individual support terms disclosed at admission. International and domestic doctoral applicants receive the same financial consideration.

University funding information

Berkeley’s electrical engineering doctorate gives breadth a measurable role. Students build a major, an inside minor and an outside minor, then satisfy EE-specific preliminary and qualifying requirements. We value that structure for projects that connect areas such as circuits, physical electronics, controls, energy or communication systems. The department also distinguishes its electrical and computer science application divisions, an important detail within the shared EECS name. Both the MS/PhD and PhD-only paths lead through the same doctoral coursework; the choice chiefly affects the intermediate master’s. That makes Berkeley especially useful to compare through the proposed research field and examination area rather than through degree-label shorthand.

Where it stands out

Consider Berkeley when your research needs a defined primary field plus credible secondary expertise. Applicants with a bachelor’s can enter a doctoral route directly, while those holding a closely related master’s should use the PhD-only application.

What to weigh

The research programs require full-time study on campus and offer fall admission. EE breadth courses carry an A− threshold and must sit outside the oral-exam area. Course selection therefore needs advance planning with the advisor, especially when proposing cross-disciplinary work.

Curriculum, admission & sources

What you’ll study

  • The research doctorate combines a major field and two minor fields. The coursework guide specifies at least 12 graduate units in the major with a 3.5 GPA, plus separate minor requirements.
  • Electrical engineering breadth requires two approved courses outside the oral-exam area, each at least three units and completed with A− or better. EE and computer science use different breadth rules.
  • The outside minor requires at least six semester units, including a graduate-level course, in a direction distinct from the major and inside minor.

Research areas

  • Information, data, networks and communications
  • Control, intelligent systems and robotics
  • Integrated circuits
  • Micro/nano electromechanical systems
  • Physical electronics
  • Signal processing
  • Energy and computer architecture

Admission & progression

  • Applicants select the Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences division for the electrical engineering pathway. A bachelor’s degree, a satisfactory academic record, statements, a CV and three recommendations form the application.
  • Students can apply from a bachelor’s. Applicants already holding a related master’s should choose the PhD-only route; the MS/PhD route adds an intermediate master’s.
  • GRE scores are neither required nor accepted. Admission is for fall, and the research MS and PhD programs require full-time campus study.

Research & project requirements

  • Complete the departmental preliminary requirement, including the EE oral examination and breadth courses, then the doctoral qualifying examination.
  • Develop original research with faculty supervision and complete the dissertation. The doctoral route combines research preparation with teaching experience.

Funding & assistantships

Admitted ECE doctoral students receive aid for the anticipated study period: five years when entering with a bachelor’s or four years with a relevant master’s, subject to satisfactory progress. The department describes a tuition waiver, stipend and healthcare through fellowships or research and teaching assistantships.

University funding information

Michigan offers a particularly clear distinction between doctoral entry routes. Its coursework requirements change with a relevant master’s, while the common candidacy process keeps research readiness, graduate skills and ethics training visible for everyone. We rank the Ann Arbor program highly for that structure and for a published support period tied to the student’s preparation. The research emphasis is built with an advisor across areas that include circuits, quantum engineering, power, optics, controls and signal processing. Annual progress review then connects that initial plan to the continuing dissertation. Students can judge the program against both an academic timetable and the duration of the expected financial commitment.

Where it stands out

Michigan is a strong fit if you want an advisor-shaped ECE specialty within a broad department and a defined route from coursework to candidacy. Both bachelor’s and relevant master’s entrants have published preparation requirements to plan against.

What to weigh

The doctorate requires continuing fall and winter registration, with limited exceptions. Passing the qualifier and reaching candidacy does not necessarily finish every course requirement, so the approved plan must account for remaining classes as well as research and the final defense.

Curriculum, admission & sources

What you’ll study

  • Students entering without a relevant master’s complete at least 36 graduate coursework credits, including 30 technical credits, advanced ECE study, a major area and coursework outside ECE.
  • Students entering with a relevant master’s complete at least 18 credits under the separate post-master’s plan. Both paths include ECE 590, Skills for Success in Graduate Studies.
  • Candidacy requires an advisor-approved plan, at least 18 qualifying credits while registered at Ann Arbor, the qualifying exam and four Responsible Conduct of Research and Scholarship workshops.

Research areas

  • Applied electromagnetics and RF circuits
  • Control systems and robotics
  • Integrated circuits and VLSI
  • MEMS and microsystems
  • Optics and photonics
  • Power and energy
  • Quantum engineering
  • Signal processing and machine learning

Admission & progression

  • Bachelor’s applicants may apply directly to the PhD. The department expects strong preparation in mathematics, physics, computer science or engineering and reviews research and career goals.
  • The application includes an academic statement, personal statement, academic records and recommendations from people able to assess academic work and research potential.
  • PhD admission is for fall. Current Michigan master’s students seeking doctoral entry must apply and are strongly encouraged to establish a research relationship with a prospective advisor.

Research & project requirements

  • For satisfactory progress, finish candidacy coursework by the fourth semester and pass the qualifying exam by the twenty-first month as a precandidate.
  • Complete the thesis proposal, dissertation and defense. The research advisor evaluates progress annually, and doctoral students normally register every fall and winter until completion.

Funding & assistantships

The catalog describes a funded fall-and-spring appointment for eligible Grainger Engineering PhD students during their first five years. The package includes a full tuition waiver, partial fee waiver and stipend. Summer support and fees outside the waiver should be resolved through the specific appointment.

University funding information

Illinois makes the scale of doctoral research explicit in both of its entry routes. Thesis registration accounts for a substantial share of the 96-hour direct program or 64-hour post-master’s program, while three advanced breadth courses require engagement beyond a single topic. We give weight to that balance and to the research connections described in the current catalog. Applicants with a master’s also face an unusually consequential early decision: admission requires a willing thesis advisor. For these students, faculty conversations are part of establishing eligibility for a place, rather than an optional introduction after arrival. The published five-year academic-year funding commitment adds a useful planning boundary.

Where it stands out

Illinois suits an applicant who can explain a specific ECE research direction while making productive use of advanced breadth. A master’s graduate should be ready to approach relevant faculty with a credible topic and evidence of research preparation.

What to weigh

The 64-hour route still contains considerable new research and coursework after a master’s. The funding guarantee covers eligible fall and spring appointments with partial fee relief; applicants should establish how summer research and the remaining fees will be funded.

Curriculum, admission & sources

What you’ll study

  • The direct doctorate requires 96 hours beyond a bachelor’s, including 40–48 hours of thesis research. The route with an approved master’s requires 64 hours, including 32–40 thesis-research hours.
  • Both routes require three permanent 500-level courses in three different doctoral breadth areas. Additional electives and advanced ECE coursework depend on the entry route.
  • Register for the zero-credit ECE colloquium each term in residence. The program also offers an optional Computational Science and Engineering concentration.

Admission & progression

  • Applicants may enter through a direct bachelor’s route or with an approved master’s. The catalog accepts appropriate ECE preparation and may consider related science, mathematics or computing backgrounds.
  • A student applying with a master’s is admitted only when a faculty member is willing to serve as the doctoral thesis advisor. Discuss research interests and possible topics with prospective advisors before the deadline.
  • The catalog lists GRE scores as optional and evaluates academic preparation and language proficiency under department and Graduate College requirements.

Research & project requirements

  • Pass qualifying and preliminary examinations before completing the final examination or dissertation defense and depositing the dissertation.
  • Research appointments can connect the department with the Beckman Institute, Coordinated Science Laboratory, Materials Research Laboratory and Holonyak Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory.

Funding & assistantships

The graduate-admission page says most students admitted to the Atlanta ECE PhD receive a teaching or research assistantship offer in the acceptance letter. Support is not universal, and faculty research appointments depend on available opportunities. Confirm the duration, duties and benefits of the actual offer.

University funding information

Georgia Tech gives a large electrical and computer engineering research field a disciplined course structure. Students develop one technical focus, study ECE topics outside it and complete a technical minor in another discipline. We value the specificity of the coursework qualifier and the subsequent proposal examination: the first checks advanced preparation, while the second asks for a defensible plan for new research. The professional-communication seminar adds a practical skill to that sequence. Its 43-hour course framework can incorporate prior master’s study, but the dissertation remains the central doctoral obligation. This is a strong option for someone who wants substantial technical breadth with a clear assessment schedule.

Where it stands out

Georgia Tech fits applicants whose project needs both an ECE specialty and a supporting technical discipline, such as mathematics or computer science. Direct bachelor’s applicants can compete for doctoral admission and the associated assistantship opportunities.

What to weigh

The four-course qualifier requires a 3.5 GPA, and the outside minor cannot be a nontechnical management track. Most Atlanta doctoral admits receive an assistantship offer, but an applicant must still establish the actual funding arrangement before committing.

Curriculum, admission & sources

What you’ll study

  • The 43-hour course framework includes 18 ECE core hours, a nine-hour minor outside ECE, 14 elective hours and one credit each in professional communication and responsible research conduct.
  • Core study is divided between a chosen technical focus and ECE subjects outside that focus. The outside minor must be technical; management courses do not satisfy it.
  • The course requirements include eligible hours from the master’s. Up to 12 formally recorded master’s thesis hours may apply in the elective group.

Research areas

  • Bioengineering
  • Computer systems and software
  • Digital signal processing
  • Electrical energy
  • Electromagnetics
  • Electronic design
  • Nanotechnology
  • Optics and photonics
  • Systems and controls
  • Telecommunications
  • VLSI and digital design

Admission & progression

  • Applicants can enter directly from a bachelor’s in engineering or an appropriate related technical field. Prior ECE coursework may be needed for students from other backgrounds.
  • The doctoral application requires academic records, three recommendations and the prompted PhD essay. GRE scores are optional, and English proficiency requirements apply where relevant.
  • Choose research concentration areas that reflect your interests because they influence faculty review and aid decisions. Applying to the PhD does not create automatic consideration for an MS place.

Research & project requirements

  • Complete the coursework qualifier with a 3.5 GPA in four approved courses by the end of the second year.
  • Pass the proposal examination by the end of the seventh non-summer term, complete original dissertation research and defend it. At least two full-time, on-campus semesters are required.

Funding & assistantships

Qualified incoming students may receive fellowships or research and teaching assistantships. Purdue describes RA and TA positions as including tuition coverage, medical insurance and salary. Research appointments are made by individual faculty; availability depends on the project and funding.

University funding information

Purdue organizes its ECE doctorate around a student’s chosen primary research area and an individualized plan of study. The five-course mathematics and related-area requirement makes the supporting preparation concrete, even when a student enters with a master’s. We value the early research registration and the transition from course-planning advice to a doctoral committee responsible for research and examinations. The two entry routes also make clear which new classroom requirements remain after prior graduate work. Seven primary areas cover control, communications, computing, optics, microelectronics, power and circuits, with a formal microelectronics and advanced-semiconductors concentration available. The resulting program offers flexibility within documented academic boundaries.

Where it stands out

Purdue is worth considering if you want a mathematically grounded ECE research plan and can identify a faculty member whose project fits your interests. The separate direct and post-master’s requirements help students plan from different starting points.

What to weigh

The location preference is meaningful because research students must be assigned with their advisor. Assistantships are competitive rather than a universal admission benefit, and the plan-of-study GPA standard is 3.3. Confirm the research campus and written support offer together.

Attendance: Residential doctoral study is available in West Lafayette and Indianapolis. Research students must be assigned with their advisor.

Curriculum, admission & sources

What you’ll study

  • The doctorate requires 90 academic credits beyond a bachelor’s or 60 beyond a master’s, including research. Direct entrants complete at least 36 non-thesis credits; master’s entrants complete at least 12 new non-thesis credits.
  • Across the relevant master’s and doctoral study, complete five graduate courses outside the primary area: either three mathematics and two related-area courses, or two mathematics and three related-area courses.
  • Begin research registration in the first two semesters and continue thesis research each subsequent semester. A graduate seminar, written-English requirement and responsible-research training also apply.

Research areas

  • Automatic control
  • Communications, networks and signal processing
  • Computer engineering
  • Fields and optics
  • Microelectronics and nanotechnology
  • Power and energy devices and systems
  • VLSI and circuit design

Admission & progression

  • Bachelor’s students can apply to the direct PhD; students completing a qualified master’s can apply through the post-master’s route. GRE scores are optional.
  • Residential applicants select West Lafayette or Indianapolis, with assignment based on availability. A student’s research location must match the advisor’s assigned location.
  • The admission guide identifies a priority deadline for financial-support consideration. Strong research preparation, academic records and recommendations matter when seeking a funded place.

Research & project requirements

  • An academic advisory committee helps with the initial course plan. A doctoral advisory committee of at least four members then guides the dissertation under the major professor.
  • Pass a preliminary examination, usually including a written proposal and oral presentation, then complete original research and the final dissertation examination.

Funding & assistantships

Faculty normally award research assistantships. At a 20-hour weekly appointment, both research and teaching assistants receive a monthly salary with tuition and individual health insurance fully covered. Fellowships may form part of a package; the published benefits apply to the specified appointment, not automatically to every admission.

University funding information

UT Austin makes the chosen research concentration central to admission, advising and the doctoral course plan. Its eight tracks cover subjects from power electronics and physical devices to communications, computing and biological interfaces, while allowing work that crosses those areas. We value the separation between classroom preparation and continuing research assessment. The current catalog calls for a candidacy evaluation by committee members who are not the dissertation supervisors, followed later by a progress review. That structure gives the student more than one occasion to test the research plan before the final defense. The catalog also states a specific limit on outside coursework, helping master’s graduates assess their remaining preparation.

Where it stands out

UT Austin fits applicants who can identify a primary ECE track and explain the research problem they want to pursue. An appropriate master’s course record may support an approved 18-hour contribution toward the 30-hour classroom requirement.

What to weigh

The concentration choices affect the faculty who review the application, so a broad statement without a technical direction is a poor fit. The 30 classroom hours are only part of the doctorate; research registration, committee evaluation and dissertation work continue beyond them.

Curriculum, admission & sources

What you’ll study

  • The doctoral Program of Work requires 30 hours of graduate classroom coursework. Up to 18 approved semester hours from another institution may count if they were not used for a prior bachelor’s or doctorate.
  • Coursework in the Program of Work must meet a 3.33 GPA standard. The dissertation supervisor, committee and graduate authorities approve the plan.
  • Eight academic concentrations organize admissions and advising, while students may work across their boundaries. Research-problems and dissertation registrations accompany classroom study.

Research areas

  • Architecture, computer systems and embedded systems
  • bioECE
  • Decision, information and communications engineering
  • Electromagnetics and acoustics
  • Electronics, photonics and quantum systems
  • Integrated circuits and systems
  • Power electronics and power systems
  • Software engineering and systems

Admission & progression

  • Select the PhD as the ultimate degree objective and identify first- and second-choice academic tracks. A master’s may be pursued along the doctoral route.
  • The application includes a research-focused statement of purpose, CV or résumé, transcripts and at least three recommendations. GRE scores are not considered.
  • Applicants normally hold an ECE bachelor’s; another degree may qualify with appropriate preparation for the specialty. Required remedial work sits outside the approved doctoral Program of Work.

Research & project requirements

  • Find and maintain a dissertation supervisor and form a committee with members inside and outside the ECE Graduate Studies Committee.
  • Under the current rules, the nonsupervisory committee members conduct a candidacy evaluation. A later progress review precedes the completed dissertation and final defense.

What matters in electrical engineering doctoral programs

Technical depth with a reason for breadth

A useful doctoral course plan supports the research question. We examine major areas, technical minors, advanced courses and qualification rules, including whether prior graduate work contributes to the plan.

Research training beyond course completion

Proposals, research examinations, committee feedback and the dissertation show what the student must accomplish. Teaching or professional preparation adds value when it fits the intended research career.

An advisor relationship that can sustain the project

Faculty availability affects admission, funding and the direction of research. We give weight to programs that explain when students choose advisors and how committees evaluate their progress.

Support with readable conditions

A first-year fellowship, a five-year academic-year guarantee and an individual faculty assistantship are different commitments. The reviews distinguish their duration, benefits and renewal conditions.

Electrical engineering PhD programs: EE, ECE or EECS?

Degree names vary among electrical engineering PhD programs. Stanford awards a PhD in Electrical Engineering. Michigan, Illinois, Georgia Tech, Purdue and UT Austin use Electrical and Computer Engineering. Berkeley’s electrical pathway sits within Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, while MIT’s EECS department offers both PhD and ScD doctorates. A broader department name can accommodate electrical research, but it does not make every computing project the same kind of specialization.

Start with the research group and then check the application division, concentration and examination area. Berkeley explicitly tells electrical applicants to select EECS rather than the separate CS division. UT Austin asks applicants to identify preferred academic tracks. Those choices are more informative than treating every program with the letters ECE as interchangeable.

Can you enter electrical engineering PhD programs after a bachelor’s?

Yes. The reviewed programs describe doctoral entry from a bachelor’s, although the subsequent route differs. MIT normally incorporates an SM thesis before the later doctoral milestones for those without a master’s. Stanford allows students to earn a master’s along the way. Berkeley offers both MS/PhD and PhD-only routes to bachelor’s applicants.

In electrical engineering PhD programs, prior graduate preparation can change the remaining work without making the doctorate a short course extension. Michigan separates its 36-credit and 18-credit coursework routes. Illinois requires 96 total hours from the bachelor’s or 64 after an approved master’s. At Illinois, applicants who already hold a master’s must also have a faculty member willing to supervise the thesis before admission.

How to read credits in electrical engineering PhD programs

Credit totals for electrical engineering PhD programs combine different kinds of work. Stanford’s 135 quarter units include research, and only part of that total is required letter-graded lecture or laboratory study. Purdue’s 90-credit direct route includes thesis research. Georgia Tech’s 43-hour figure describes its course framework, with dissertation research as a separate central obligation.

UT Austin’s current catalog requires 30 classroom hours and permits up to 18 approved hours from another institution. Research-problems and dissertation registrations accompany those classes. When discussing a degree plan, ask the department to identify the remaining taught courses, accepted prior study and research registrations separately. Comparing the headline totals alone can misrepresent the commitment.

Are the best electrical engineering PhD programs funded?

Funding is central to choosing electrical engineering PhD programs, but the offers differ. Stanford describes full support while students meet progress and advisor conditions. Michigan specifies an anticipated five-year support period for bachelor’s entrants or four years for relevant master’s entrants. Illinois describes an eligible funded appointment for fall and spring in the first five years, with full tuition and partial fee waivers.

MIT and Berkeley explain support through fellowships and research or teaching appointments. Georgia Tech says most Atlanta PhD admits receive an assistantship offer. Purdue and UT Austin describe faculty and teaching appointments with defined benefits. Read the actual letter for the number of funded months, summer arrangements, fees, healthcare and the responsibilities attached to renewal.

Choose electrical engineering PhD programs by research direction

A promising electrical engineering project starts with a technical question: improving the behavior of a power converter, characterizing a semiconductor device, designing an integrated circuit, or developing a new method for communication or control. Look for faculty whose recent work uses the methods and facilities the question needs. Then examine how the program’s major, minor or track rules would support it.

Use these electrical engineering PhD programs to build a focused application list, then discuss the project with the relevant departments. For broader work across engineering fields, our general engineering doctoral rankings examine a different set of degree structures. The electrical engineering master’s rankings are useful when a thesis or advanced technical coursework is the immediate next step.

Questions, answered

What else should you know?

What makes electrical engineering PhD programs different from a master’s?

A PhD requires a significant original research contribution and formal evaluation of that work. Coursework prepares you for the project, but proposals, qualifying or candidacy examinations, committee review and the dissertation determine progress beyond the master’s level.

Do electrical engineering PhD programs require the GRE?

Requirements vary by department. MIT’s standard EECS application, Berkeley and UT Austin do not use GRE scores. Georgia Tech, Illinois and Purdue describe the GRE as optional. Check the requirements for the specific application cycle and degree route.

Which electrical engineering PhD programs are online?

The national selection here consists of campus research programs. Stanford’s EE doctorate is exclusively full time, and Berkeley does not offer a part-time research PhD. Residence, laboratory work and advisor access should be confirmed before planning doctoral study around continued employment.

How long do electrical engineering PhD programs take?

Preparation and research progress affect the timeline. Stanford describes a typical five-to-seven-year completion period. Michigan encourages completion within five years from a bachelor’s or four from a relevant master’s. A university’s target or funding period is not an individual completion guarantee.
