A vehicle-systems or computational concentration, for example, provides a defined direction within the Interdisciplinary Engineering major. This level of choice makes early course planning important. A concentration has its own requirements, and the degree allows only a limited share of non-engineering or transferred work. Indiana residency also changes the published per-credit price, so online enrollment does not imply one national tuition rate.
The on-campus master’s cost table lists $71,697 tuition for three terms in 2026–27. Fees, health insurance and living expenses are additional. The number of terms needed for the research MS depends on its coursework and thesis; the three-term figure is not a promised total degree price.
The MS program page describes limited funding and says most MS students support their own study. Faculty or grant support may cover tuition, a stipend and health insurance for some or all terms. Establish the terms of any support with the faculty sponsor before budgeting.
Dartmouth’s Engineering Sciences MS makes research the center of a broad degree. The university’s online tuition table lists the MS in Engineering at $804.06 per credit. Registration, degree-assessment and graduate textbook-related fees are listed separately. The selected 31–33-credit track changes the tuition total; the Aerospace Manufacturing emphasis includes a separate UCLA Extension certificate.
UW–Platteville makes the finishing route an explicit part of an engineering master’s decision. Students share a mathematics, computing, communication and management core, then choose a technical emphasis and complete a thesis, a capstone project or additional coursework. That allows the same broad degree framework to support different kinds of advanced work. The technical choices are concrete: engineering design draws on areas such as finite element methods and product development, while control and power systems follow their own course requirements. What general engineering master’s programs actually award
General engineering is a useful category, but the degree on the diploma can have several names. Purdue awards an MS or MSE with an Interdisciplinary Engineering major, depending on undergraduate preparation. San José State keeps the title MS in Engineering even when the approved electives combine electrical and mechanical subjects. Dartmouth’s research degree is an MS in Engineering Sciences.
The title does not always imply the same amount of freedom. Montana Tech’s MS in General Engineering has named concentrations; the mechanical option reviewed here has its own technical scope. Build a technical focus that crosses departments for a reason
Start with the engineering problem you want to understand. A product involving mechanisms, sensors and control software may need a different course mix from a thermal system or a materials-design problem. Write down the technical preparation each part requires, then see whether a program can support the combination through approved coursework and supervision.
The rules matter. San José State generally limits its six electives to no more than three from the same department. NC State allows no more than six classes in one area across the degree. Purdue requires at least 18 credits of Purdue graduate engineering courses. These boundaries help reveal whether a proposed plan is broadly connected or simply a disciplinary degree assembled under another name.

Compare online engineering study with the required campus work

UW–Platteville offers a fully online route and a separate Executive Model with in-person sessions. Those are distinct attendance choices. At NC State, taking an on-campus section while enrolled in a distance track also changes how that course is billed. Match the exact route and course section to both your calendar and budget.
Research and project timing deserve the same attention as class delivery. San José State’s project spans an academic year. UW–Platteville does not allow all six thesis or capstone credits in one semester. A flexible course schedule still needs to accommodate those academic sequences.
