Doctoral degree rankings in Wisconsin

Best Engineering Doctoral Programs in Wisconsin

UW–Milwaukee’s Engineering PhD gives technical breadth a formal place in the degree: students complete a major, a minor and quantitative methods alongside original research. Our 2026 review of engineering doctoral programs in Wisconsin examines this broad award and the four current majors within it: biomedical, civil, industrial and materials engineering.

UW–Milwaukee is the selected program in this state ranking. Its flexible study plan and late-afternoon or evening courses can appeal to working engineers, but residence, examinations and committee supervision remain substantive requirements. The full review explains where that flexibility helps and where the academic rules still shape the calendar.

Inside this ranking

How we ranked general engineering doctoral programs in Wisconsin

This selection of engineering doctoral programs in Wisconsin covers UW–Milwaukee’s current Engineering PhD. Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering now have separate doctoral awards at the university. We preserve that distinction and evaluate the broad degree through its published curriculum, admission requirements, research milestones and financial-support policies.

UW–Milwaukee earns inclusion for an explicit major-and-minor structure, defined quantitative preparation and a supervised dissertation sequence. This one-program selection is an editorial assessment of the broad award. It should be used alongside faculty research information and the requirements of the particular major you intend to enter.

Funding & assistantships

Fellowships and assistantships are competitive. Eligible teaching appointments include tuition remission and access to health insurance; research appointments are selected by faculty using available project funding. Confirm the appointment fraction, stipend, summer coverage and renewal conditions in the award.

University funding information

UW–Milwaukee makes breadth a formal part of its Engineering PhD. The degree includes a major, a separate minor and quantitative methods, so applicants can examine how a second technical area will support their dissertation. Its current broad award covers biomedical, civil, industrial and materials engineering; mechanical and electrical engineering now have separate PhDs. We value the published requirements for advisor selection, examinations and committee membership because they show how an individual plan is supervised. Late-afternoon and evening courses can help working students, but the degree also imposes a residence requirement. It is a structured research doctorate whose flexibility must be planned around those academic obligations.

Where it stands out

Consider UW–Milwaukee if your research belongs in one of its four Engineering PhD majors and benefits from a substantial minor. The course schedule may help you combine employment with early coursework, subject to the actual offerings and research arrangement.

What to weigh

Part-time coursework does not remove the residence rule: students must complete qualifying credit loads across consecutive semesters. Competitive financial support also differs by appointment. Check the current major’s requirements rather than applying older college-wide lists that include the separate electrical and mechanical degrees.

Curriculum, admission & sources

What you’ll study

  • The 66-credit minimum includes 21 major credits, nine minor credits, six mathematics or quantitative-methods credits, 18 dissertation credits, electives and academic-writing/professional-development courses.
  • The current broad Engineering PhD majors are biomedical, civil, industrial and materials engineering.
  • An approved plan must satisfy separate 3.0 GPA requirements in the major, minor and quantitative-methods areas.

Research areas

  • Biomedical engineering
  • Civil engineering
  • Industrial engineering
  • Materials engineering

Admission & progression

  • Applicants normally hold an engineering or computer-science bachelor’s or master’s with a 3.0 GPA in the highest degree.
  • Related backgrounds may be admitted with defined prerequisite deficiencies; these do not count toward doctoral credits.
  • Submit a professional-goals statement, at least two references, GRE results and English proficiency evidence when required.

Research & project requirements

  • Select a major professor before completing 12 credits, or nine credits for part-time students.
  • Pass the written qualifying examination, a doctoral preliminary examination and the dissertation defense. The doctoral committee includes major- and minor-area representation.

What matters in general engineering doctoral programs in Wisconsin

A substantial minor

The approved minor is a meaningful part of the Engineering PhD rather than an informal suggestion to take one outside course. We assess whether that structure can supply a second technical perspective for the dissertation.

Milestones that guide an individual plan

Advisor selection, qualifying examinations and the preliminary examination establish checkpoints before independent dissertation work. The published process makes the responsibilities of students and faculty easier to understand.

Flexibility with defined residence

Evening coursework can help working students, but consecutive-semester enrollment requirements remain. We consider that combination when evaluating whether an applicant can carry out the doctorate alongside other responsibilities.

Which UW–Milwaukee majors award the Engineering PhD?

The current broad Engineering doctorate covers biomedical, civil, industrial and materials engineering. The university lists mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and computer science as separate PhDs. A prospective student should select the actual award and major before relying on a course list or examination rule found elsewhere in the college.

The Engineering PhD allows an individual plan when suitable courses and a qualified major professor are available. That flexibility can help a materials project draw on quantitative methods or an industrial project develop a complementary technical minor. The plan still needs approval, and changes require a revised submission rather than an informal substitution.

Credits in engineering doctoral programs in Wisconsin

UW–Milwaukee’s minimum is 66 graduate credits beyond the bachelor’s. The distribution includes 21 credits in the major, nine in the minor, six in mathematics or quantitative methods, 18 in doctoral thesis work and additional electives and professional preparation. The total therefore includes research registration as well as classes.

The program requires separate 3.0 GPAs in the major, minor and quantitative-methods areas. It also sets advanced-course and university-enrollment minimums. An approved mathematics minor can interact with the quantitative requirement, but the remaining credits still need to be accounted for in the plan. Have the advisor review the full distribution before assuming that one course satisfies several requirements.

Selecting a doctoral advisor and passing examinations

An initial program advisor is assigned at admission. The student must choose the major professor who will supervise the thesis before completing 12 credits, or nine credits for part-time study. That deadline makes early faculty discussions useful: the proposed research and the available supervision need to come together while the course plan is still being formed.

The written qualifying examination has two parts and permits two attempts under the program’s rules. The timing depends on whether the student enters with an appropriate master’s or with a different preparation. A later preliminary examination establishes candidacy. The doctoral committee includes representatives from both the major and the minor, reinforcing the degree’s technical breadth.

Can working engineers complete UW–Milwaukee’s doctorate?

Many graduate engineering courses are offered in late afternoon or evening, but the residence requirement still needs attention. Students satisfy it through at least eight graduate credits in each of two consecutive semesters or six in each of three consecutive semesters, excluding summer. A work schedule must accommodate that enrollment pattern as well as research.

Funding comes through competitive fellowships and teaching or research assistantships. Eligible teaching appointments include tuition remission and an opportunity for health coverage; research appointments depend on faculty support. Compare the actual appointment fraction, stipend and covered terms. A course schedule compatible with employment does not mean that an assistantship is compatible with unrestricted outside work.

Questions, answered

What else should you know?

Does the broad Engineering PhD include mechanical engineering?

UW–Milwaukee now lists Mechanical Engineering as a separate PhD. The broad Engineering award currently includes biomedical, civil, industrial and materials majors. Use the requirements for the exact degree you plan to enter.

Do engineering doctoral programs in Wisconsin accept related science backgrounds?

UW–Milwaukee may admit related backgrounds with defined course deficiencies when the preparation is close enough to the intended major. Those prerequisite courses do not count toward the required doctoral credits.

Can I satisfy UW–Milwaukee’s PhD residence requirement part-time?

The program offers a qualifying pattern of six graduate credits in each of three consecutive semesters, excluding summer. Confirm how that sequence fits the research plan and any employment or assistantship obligations.
