Best Electrical Engineering Master’s Programs in California

A course listed in the chosen depth area cannot be reused as breadth. Stanford's electrical MS uses a defined depth-and-breadth structure within a largely individualized course plan. You'll complete twelve quarter units in one depth area, nine units outside that area, fifteen technical units and nine additional approved units. The five depth areas range from circuits and physical technology to communications, software/hardware systems, and signal processing with control and optimization. The standard degree is based on coursework and does not require a thesis. That makes it a strong program to examine when your goal is advanced technical practice and you already know which graduate courses support it.

  • The degree requires 45 quarter units:12 depth units, nine breadth units,15 technical units and nine additional approved units.
  • Depth courses must be at the 200 level or above, with at least six units at the 300 level or above. Breadth courses must come from outside the selected depth area.
  • The technical requirement includes at least nine units of 200-level or higher lecture courses. A program proposal is due by the end of the first quarter for regular full-time entrants.

Admission & progression

  • Applicants with electrical engineering, other engineering, mathematics, physics or related-science backgrounds are welcome. Adequate preparation in circuits, digital systems, laboratories, mathematics and physics is important.
  • The external full-time MS admits for autumn entry. The published deadline for autumn 2027 is December 1,2026.
  • Transfer applicants follow the regular admission process. Coursework from another institution cannot be transferred into the Stanford MS.

Research & project requirements

  • The standard MS has no thesis requirement. An approved plan can include independent study within the applicable limits.
  • The optional distinction-in-research route adds a substantial supervised research commitment and an approved research report. It is separate from the standard coursework requirements.

Building a Stanford electrical MS depth-and-breadth plan

The Stanford bulletin identifies five depth areas: circuits; software and hardware systems; communications and networking; physical technology and science; and signal processing, control and optimization. All depth courses must be at the 200 level or above, with at least six units at the 300 level or above. The choice is therefore more specific than choosing a broad interest such as electronics and then collecting any available graduate electives.

The technical requirement adds fifteen units, including at least nine units of graduate-level lecture courses. Independent study cannot replace that required lecture block. Another nine units complete the standard program, subject to the approved course rules. Before applying, draft a tentative depth area and a few breadth courses, then check their prerequisites. The faculty program advisor helps finalize the plan after admission, and regular full-time entrants submit their proposal by the end of the first quarter.

Stanford’s terminal MS and optional research distinction

The standard degree has no thesis requirement, and admission to it does not provide automatic entry to the electrical PhD. A student who later wants the doctorate applies through the annual doctoral admission process. Stanford also advises applicants whose clear ultimate goal is a PhD to consider applying directly to that degree. That distinction matters when comparing electrical engineering master’s programs in California for research preparation rather than immediate advanced professional study.

A separate distinction-in-research option adds a substantial supervised research commitment and an approved research report to the regular MS requirements. It should be considered with the faculty supervision and time it needs. Don't treat the existence of an optional research route as a promise that every course-based master’s student will receive a funded laboratory position. What Stanford’s quarter tuition means for a master’s budget

For 2026–27, graduate engineering tuition is $15,100 per quarter at eight to ten units and $23,239 at eleven to eighteen units. Stanford describes one-and-a-half to two years as the usual full-time completion period. A forty-five-unit degree should not be priced by multiplying a single per-credit amount across all units, because the tuition schedule uses enrollment bands and future-year rates can change. Add fees, insurance and the living costs for the quarters you expect to attend.

MS departmental assistantships are limited, with priority for PhD students. The department’s course-assistant process also has prior-enrollment and academic conditions. Prepare an initial budget from confirmed resources, then include an assistantship only when you have a specific offer.
