2026–27 tuition

Resident base tuition: $482 per credit, capped at 12 credits

Cost basis & conditions

Effective fall 2026, undergraduate tuition is $482 resident or $1,483 nonresident per credit, with no additional tuition for hours above 12. The student-services fee is $1,002 per semester. Engineering adds $495 per semester for freshman classification or $865 for sophomore, junior and senior classifications; other applicable expenses are separate.

University cost & financial aid information

Auburn’s Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering makes the progression from fabrication and measurement to complete design easy to follow. Its current plan includes manufacturing technology, dynamics and mechanics laboratories, then measurement and instrumentation and a two-course comprehensive design sequence. We include the BME for that connected practical foundation and for the way the 122-credit plan identifies its core-curriculum choices, helping students see how general requirements fit alongside the mechanical work.

Where it stands out

Auburn is a useful option if you want manufacturing and physical testing to remain visible throughout the degree. Ask how the early manufacturing laboratory informs machine design and the comprehensive project, and request examples showing how students measure performance before making a design revision.

What to weigh

Students move from pre-engineering into the major only after satisfying the college’s preparation requirements. The published 122-credit route also depends on fitting the specified core choices into the plan. For cost, the Engineering professional fee rises with academic classification, so a freshman bill should not be projected unchanged across all later years.

Curriculum, admission & sources

What you’ll study

  • The current plan includes manufacturing technology, dynamics and mechanics laboratories, measurement and instrumentation, and computer-aided engineering.
  • Comprehensive Design I and II form the senior sequence after courses in mechanical design concepts, machine design and systems control.
  • The 122-credit plan recommends a history sequence to satisfy the degree’s particular core requirements without adding credits.

Admission & progression

  • Engineering students begin in pre-engineering and must meet the specified preparation requirements before moving into the mechanical major.
  • For mechanical engineering, the college lists an unadjusted cumulative Auburn GPA of at least 2.0 and C or better in the designated mathematics, chemistry, physics, introductory engineering and computing courses.
  • The current university freshman application requires the application, transcript and official ACT or SAT scores.

Design & practical experience

  • The plan combines a manufacturing technology laboratory with later dynamics, mechanics and measurement work.
  • Senior students complete Comprehensive Design I and II after the mechanical design foundation.

2026–27 tuition

Resident campus tuition: $5,959 per semester

Cost basis & conditions

Fall 2026 or spring 2027 campus undergraduate tuition for 12–16 credits is $5,959 resident or $17,962 nonresident. Hours above 16 carry an additional tuition charge. Technology/infrastructure charges, course-specific fees, required dining charges and other applicable costs are separate; distance and Gadsden programs use different rates.

University cost & financial aid information

Alabama’s mechanical BS combines component-level analysis with manufacturing and energy systems in a 130-credit degree. Finite element laboratory work, static and dynamic machine components, modern manufacturing and a two-course design sequence give the required curriculum several practical connections. We include the Tuscaloosa program for this visible range within the mechanical core, while approved electives allow students to extend an interest beyond the required courses rather than replacing them.

Where it stands out

Consider Alabama if you want to study both how mechanical components carry loads and how an energy system behaves. Ask how the finite element laboratory, manufacturing course and senior design sequence connect, and examine the approved elective list with an advisor before choosing a particular advanced direction.

What to weigh

The degree requires 130 credits, while the standard semester tuition band covers 12–16. A heavier term can therefore change the tuition bill as well as the workload. Applicants should also follow the testing rule for their actual entry year: the university’s requirements change for 2027 and again for 2028.

Curriculum, admission & sources

What you’ll study

  • The 130-credit degree includes finite element laboratory work, modern manufacturing processes, dynamic systems, control and instrumentation components, and energy systems.
  • Mechanical Engineering Design I and II are required senior design courses.
  • Six mechanical elective credits and three technical elective credits provide approved advanced choices beyond the required core.

Admission & progression

  • First-year university admission uses the published academic subject requirements and holistic review process.
  • For 2027 entry, applicants with a cumulative high-school GPA below 3.0 must submit ACT or SAT scores; the university says all 2028 applicants will need scores.
  • Use the mechanical degree requirements and departmental advising to determine how prior coursework satisfies the 130-credit plan.

Design & practical experience

  • Required laboratory work includes mechanics of materials and finite element analysis.
  • The mechanical core links manufacturing and energy systems with a two-course senior design sequence.

2026–27 tuition

Resident campus tuition: $5,511 per semester

Cost basis & conditions

2026–27 campus undergraduate tuition for 12–18 credits is $5,511 resident or $13,076 nonresident. Infrastructure adds $42 per credit, and listed engineering course prefixes carry a $46-per-credit college fee. MAE 490 and 491 have an additional $25 per credit; other applicable course and attendance costs are separate.

University cost & financial aid information

UAH’s mechanical BS joins experimental coursework with computer-aided analysis and a two-course senior design sequence. The current 128-credit checksheet includes measurement, materials and heat-transfer laboratories, then offers a choice between thermal-system and machine-element design. We include the Huntsville program for that combination of physical testing and analytical work, supported by a departmental machine shop with fabrication equipment students use to develop projects and connect design decisions with manufacturing.

Where it stands out

UAH is worth examining if you want to compare a thermal-system direction with a machine-design direction while keeping both within a common mechanical foundation. Ask how students choose the senior design pairing and how the machine shop is used in required courses, including training, supervision and access outside scheduled classes.

What to weigh

The checksheet requires prerequisite grades of C− or higher and explicitly excludes Engineering Technology courses from satisfying degree requirements. Transfer credit needs to be checked accordingly. Tuition also excludes infrastructure and course-college charges, and the senior design courses carry another listed fee, so calculate costs from the courses you will actually take.

Curriculum, admission & sources

What you’ll study

  • The 2026–27 checksheet specifies 128 credits, including numerical methods, measurement and instrumentation, mechanics of materials and heat-transfer laboratory work.
  • Senior study includes computer-aided engineering analysis, analysis of engineering systems and Senior Design I and II.
  • Students choose between thermal-system design and machine-element design, alongside approved technical electives.

Admission & progression

  • UAH’s current university freshman process remains test optional for the 2026–27 application cycle and recommends scores for applicants below 3.5 high-school GPA.
  • The mechanical checksheet requires prerequisite courses to be completed with C− or higher and identifies separate requirements for the systems-analysis course.
  • The checksheet excludes Engineering Technology courses from satisfying this mechanical degree’s requirements, so transfer applicants should request exact course evaluations.

Design & practical experience

  • The department’s student machine shop supports fabrication with milling machines, lathes, welding, CNC equipment, additive manufacturing and laser cutting.
  • The current plan includes measurement, materials and thermal laboratory work before the senior design sequence.

What matters in mechanical engineering bachelor’s programs in Alabama

Required practical preparation

We give weight to the laboratory and design courses that students must complete, including the preparation for senior projects.

A coherent degree plan

Different credit totals, core-curriculum choices and transfer rules affect the actual sequence of study; they are not quality scores by themselves.

Costs that match the student’s courses

Tuition bands, professional fees and course-based charges should be matched to the student’s academic year, classification and planned schedule.

Compare the laboratory sequence with the work you want to do

Auburn’s plan starts practical work with a manufacturing technology laboratory and continues through dynamics, mechanics, measurement and instrumentation. Comprehensive Design I and II follow the mechanical design foundation. During a visit, ask to see how a part or assembly changes between its first model, its fabrication and its final performance test.

Alabama’s required work includes a finite element laboratory, manufacturing processes, static and dynamic machine components, and energy systems. UAH’s current checksheet includes materials and thermal laboratory work, computer-aided engineering analysis and a choice of senior thermal-system or machine-element design. These differences can help you identify the questions you want to pursue while retaining a broad mechanical education.

Treat the credit total as a planning detail

Auburn’s current BME plan lists 122 credits, Alabama’s BS requires 130, and UAH’s 2026–27 mechanical checksheet lists 128. Those figures should begin an individual course review, not a claim that one program is automatically easier or faster. The required subjects, prior credit and prerequisite order all affect your own path.

Auburn specifically recommends a history sequence to fit its core requirements within the published total. UAH’s checksheet excludes Engineering Technology courses from satisfying the mechanical degree and specifies prerequisite-grade requirements. Transfer applicants should ask which courses satisfy named requirements, what remains to be completed on campus and when those remaining courses are offered.

Check both the application and the route into the major

Auburn students begin in pre-engineering and move into mechanical engineering after meeting the college’s preparation requirements. The college lists a minimum unadjusted Auburn GPA and specified courses that require C or better. A university admission decision therefore does not describe every later academic condition.

Application-year details also matter. Alabama’s current freshman guidance changes testing requirements for 2027 entry and again for 2028. UAH describes a test-optional policy for its 2026–27 application cycle. Use the rule for your own start date and applicant category, and distinguish university-wide application requirements from the mechanical program’s continuing academic requirements.

Build the engineering bill from the right components

Auburn charges undergraduate tuition up to a 12-credit cap, a student-services fee and an Engineering professional fee that is higher after freshman classification. Alabama’s standard semester tuition band covers 12–16 credits, with an overload charge above that range. UAH uses a 12–18-credit tuition band and adds infrastructure and course-college fees.

UAH’s fee schedule also lists an additional charge for the two mechanical senior-design courses. Alabama publishes course-specific charges separately from its tuition table. Use the actual classes in a proposed term to identify these items, then add housing, food, transport and materials. Compare that full budget with your aid offer using the engineering cost guide.

Questions, answered

What else should you know?

What undergraduate mechanical degree does Auburn award?

Auburn’s official curriculum identifies the Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering, or BME. The current plan lists 122 credits and recommends particular core choices to fit that total.

Does a lower credit total mean a shorter degree?

Not necessarily. The published totals describe different curricula. Your preparation, transfer equivalencies, course prerequisites and term availability determine the schedule you can actually complete.

Can Engineering Technology courses satisfy UAH’s mechanical degree?

The 2026–27 mechanical checksheet explicitly says Engineering Technology courses may not be used to satisfy degree requirements. Have an advisor evaluate the exact courses you intend to transfer before relying on them in a plan.

Is one annual tuition number enough for an Alabama engineering budget?

No. The reviewed schools apply different enrollment bands, professional fees and course-based charges. Use the applicable year and semester schedule, then add non-tuition expenses and compare your own aid offer.
