  • Applicants need a bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics or a comparable science field by entry. A prior master’s is not required for doctoral admission.
  • The application includes a statement of purpose, résumé, three recommendations, transcripts and the doctoral supplemental questions, including faculty interests. At least one recommendation should be academic; the department prefers two.
  • Stanford states that GRE scores are not accepted through January 2027. The Fall 2027 doctoral application deadline is December 1, 2026.

Mechanical engineering PhD programs in California: the first-year research decision

Stanford’s deadline to align with a permanent adviser is the end of the third quarter. You should therefore arrive ready to investigate particular faculty interests, even if you have not yet committed to one laboratory. A broad interest such as robotics or energy needs to become a workable research direction with an available supervisor.

For students who enter without an adviser, the department’s research-rotation structure offers a way to explore groups. The bulletin describes registration in ME 398 during that process, with a new sponsor for each rotation until the student has aligned. The permanent adviser relationship includes a commitment to research supervision and financial support.

Ask prospective groups how a rotation project is defined, how feedback is given and what evidence helps both sides decide whether to continue. If your proposed adviser is outside Mechanical Engineering, the program also requires an ME co-adviser. That arrangement needs to satisfy the department’s supervision and examination rules.

The 135-unit total includes more than new classroom courses

The PhD requires 135 Stanford units. An approved prior master’s can contribute up to forty-five units, but acceptance of that work must be established through the university’s process. The total is expressed in quarter units and should not be compared directly with another school’s semester-credit figure.

Students complete at least twenty-one units of advanced technical coursework beyond the master’s level. The degree also requires a formal minor or an approved breadth plan that develops knowledge beyond the immediate research topic. These are academic decisions to make with the adviser, not merely a search for courses that fit a timetable.

A useful proposed plan explains what each advanced course contributes to the dissertation and what the outside study adds. Ask which prior courses can be accepted, whether the intended advanced classes are offered when needed and how the coursework fits around first-year research. That conversation is particularly important if your earlier degree was in physics or another engineering discipline.

You can apply without a prior master’s

Stanford accepts doctoral applicants with a bachelor’s in engineering, physics or a comparable science field completed by entry. A master’s is not required. The application asks for a statement of purpose, résumé, transcripts and three recommendations, with at least one academic recommendation and a preference for two.

The doctoral supplemental questions include faculty interests. Use those questions to connect your preparation with the research you want to pursue. A concrete account of a project, the methods you used and the questions it raised can explain your readiness more clearly than a list of broad engineering topics.

For Fall 2027 entry, the published deadline is December 1, 2026. The department states that GRE scores are not accepted through January 2027.
