For new post-master’s PhD admits from Fall 2026, Purdue requires at least fifteen graduate coursework credits beyond the master’s. The earlier cohort minimum was twenty-one. The current degrees page retains the ninety-credit combined course-and-research requirement, including accepted master’s credits, so the course change should not be interpreted as eliminating dissertation work.

The direct PhD continues to require thirty-six graduate coursework credits, with the remaining credits met through research registration. Purdue’s degree checklist specifies at least fifty-four research credits for that route. The adviser and committee may recommend additional courses when your background or research project requires them.

Direct PhD students can also seek a master’s along the way when they meet the separate master’s requirements, file the appropriate plan and register for master’s candidacy. If that option matters to you, ask how its coursework fits with the doctoral plan and the combined limit on independent-project credit.

Mathematics and mechanical depth remain part of the plan

The doctoral plan requires nine hours of applied mathematics, including at least six directly from the mathematics department. The checklist also requires a 600-level lecture course that cannot be the course used to satisfy the mathematics requirement. Purdue’s current degree instructions add an ME graduate course outside the mathematics and 600-level lecture categories.

Those requirements should be mapped to actual courses with the adviser. A course that is mathematically demanding does not automatically satisfy the mathematics-department requirement, and a class selected for research preparation may sit outside the approved degree plan. Confirm the category assigned to each course before relying on it to complete the minimum.

Purdue’s research areas span design and manufacturing, dynamics and vibration, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, solid mechanics, systems measurement and controls, and thermodynamics.
