Doctoral degree rankings in Kansas

Best Mechanical Engineering PhD Programs in Kansas

Kansas asks its mechanical doctoral students to explain research papers they receive only a week before the qualifying presentation. You prepare independently, write a concise summary and answer the committee’s questions. Your major adviser cannot sit on that qualifying committee.

Our ranking of mechanical engineering PhD programs in Kansas features the University of Kansas in Lawrence. The review examines this independent communication exercise, the advanced-knowledge qualifying standard, separate direct and post-master’s credit plans, and the priority application dates used for funding consideration.

Inside this ranking

How we ranked mechanical engineering doctoral programs in Kansas

We assessed the Kansas mechanical doctoral catalog and current departmental graduate admission instructions. The review checks the academic route from entry through qualification, the oral comprehensive examination and the original dissertation, along with the distinction between a complete funding-priority application and an actual award.

Kansas is featured for its explicit assessment of both advanced technical knowledge and independent research communication. Applicants should consider how that qualifying structure matches their preparation and how a faculty-supervised dissertation would develop from their proposed area of study.

Funding & assistantships

Complete applications received by the priority deadline are considered for available graduate teaching assistantships, scholarships and fellowships. Research assistantships depend on individual faculty research and funding. Applicants should discuss the research appointment with potential advisers and use the actual award terms to establish support.

University funding information

Kansas tests doctoral readiness through technical knowledge and an independent explanation of research literature. Its qualifying process combines approved advanced courses or examinations with a presentation on papers assigned shortly before the examination. The major adviser is excluded from that qualifying committee. Separate post-master’s and direct bachelor’s credit plans lead to the comprehensive examination and original dissertation, while the admissions calendar provides an earlier priority date for funding consideration.

Where it stands out

Kansas fits an applicant who wants a doctoral assessment that includes both strong subject preparation and the ability to explain unfamiliar literature independently. Its distinct entry plans make the course and dissertation commitment easier to evaluate after a bachelor’s or an approved master’s.

What to weigh

The qualifying knowledge threshold is higher than ordinary graduate good standing, and a conditional pass requires additional work in the weakest subject. Funding priority dates precede the final admission deadlines. Automatic award consideration does not establish an assistantship or its duration.

Curriculum, admission & sources

What you’ll study

  • The doctorate requires seventy-two graduate credits beyond the bachelor’s. Students entering after a thirty-credit master’s complete at least eighteen further coursework credits and twenty-four dissertation credits.
  • Direct bachelor’s entrants complete forty-two coursework credits and thirty dissertation credits. The plan includes advanced mechanical engineering, mathematics and ME 801 Responsible Conduct of Research.
  • The advanced-knowledge qualifying criterion uses three mechanical subjects and one mathematics subject, evaluated through approved courses or examinations. Passing requires a combined 3.7 GPA, with a conditional route beginning at 3.5 and specified additional work.

Research areas

  • Biomechanics and biomaterials
  • Computational mechanics
  • Thermal and fluid systems
  • Mechanical design
  • Manufacturing
  • Controls

Admission & progression

  • The department requires a one-page statement of purpose, résumé or CV, transcripts and three recommendations. GRE scores are waived under its current admissions instructions.
  • Fall priority and final deadlines are December 1 and May 1. Spring priority and final deadlines are October 1 and November 1. A complete application by the priority deadline receives automatic consideration for available teaching appointments, scholarships and fellowships.

Research & project requirements

  • The qualifying examination includes an independent communication exercise based on assigned research papers. Students receive the papers one week before the presentation and submit a one-page summary two days before it.
  • The major adviser cannot serve on the qualifying examination committee. A later oral comprehensive examination follows qualifying and coursework requirements and evaluates preparation for the dissertation.
  • After the comprehensive examination, candidates maintain the required dissertation enrollment. The final dissertation must make an original contribution suitable for journal publication and is defended before the committee.

What matters in mechanical engineering doctoral programs in Kansas

Independent qualification

We examine the assigned-paper presentation and the separation between the major adviser and qualifying committee.

Technical preparation

The review distinguishes the qualifying knowledge threshold, approved courses or examinations, and remaining degree requirements after a master’s.

Application timing

Priority funding dates receive separate attention from the later final admission deadlines.

Mechanical engineering PhD programs in Kansas and independent qualification

The Kansas qualifying process includes a communication assessment based on one to three research papers related to the doctoral topic. The papers are assigned a week before the presentation. Two days before presenting, you submit a one-page summary to the committee, and outside help is prohibited during preparation.

The presentation lasts no more than twenty minutes, with the full session, including questions, limited to an hour. The task is to understand the literature and explain its significance under questioning. Practice identifying the research question, the assumptions behind a method and what the evidence actually supports.

The major adviser cannot be a member of the qualifying committee. That separation gives the assessment an independent perspective on your preparation. The catalog also requires resolution of any assigned undergraduate deficiencies before qualification, so those conditions should be part of the first academic plan.

Kansas doctoral qualification also sets an advanced-knowledge threshold

The advanced-knowledge criterion covers three mechanical subjects and one approved mathematics subject. Depending on the approved approach, performance is evaluated through graduate courses or written examinations. The combined passing threshold is a 3.7 GPA, while a conditional pass can begin at 3.5.

A conditional result requires additional work in the lowest-graded subject, such as an approved course or examination completed at the required A level. The deficiency must be resolved before the comprehensive examination. Ordinary graduate good standing alone therefore does not establish readiness to advance.

Students entering with a master’s normally attempt qualification in the first semester and no later than the second. Direct bachelor’s entrants normally reach it after thirty hours of graduate coursework. Plan the technical subjects and communication preparation together so the examination comes after the relevant foundation.

Direct and post-master’s mechanical PhD credit plans at Kansas

The doctorate requires seventy-two graduate credits beyond a bachelor’s. With an approved thirty-credit master’s, the remaining minimum consists of eighteen coursework credits and twenty-four dissertation credits. The direct route requires forty-two coursework credits and thirty dissertation credits.

Both plans include advanced mechanical engineering, mathematics and responsible research preparation. ME 801 satisfies the department’s responsible-scholarship requirement. The approved study plan determines how previous mathematics and technical courses apply, so review the content of your master’s rather than assuming every prior subject meets a doctoral requirement.

After qualification and required coursework, the oral comprehensive examination evaluates preparation for the dissertation. The committee includes at least five graduate faculty members, including an outside-department perspective. The dissertation must make an original contribution suitable for journal publication and be defended before the committee. Our Kansas mechanical master’s ranking covers the earlier graduate option.

Apply by Kansas’s priority dates for doctoral funding consideration

The mechanical department’s fall priority deadline is December 1, ahead of the May 1 final deadline. For spring, the priority date is October 1 and the final deadline is November 1. A complete application by the priority date receives automatic consideration for available teaching appointments, scholarships and fellowships.

Research assistantships depend on faculty research and funding. Contact prospective advisers with a focused explanation of your preparation and research interests. The department requires a one-page statement of purpose, a résumé or CV, transcripts and three recommendations, and its current instructions waive GRE scores.

Compare an actual award by its appointment period, duties and covered costs. Priority consideration is a review opportunity, and the offer establishes the financial commitment.
