The teaching practicum is separate from a paid assistantship

All Woodruff doctoral students complete a three-credit teaching practicum. Students work with a faculty member on parts of a course, including activities such as lectures, tutorials, homework, laboratories or examinations. The faculty member retains responsibility for the course.

The practicum does not count toward the forty-two graded coursework hours and cannot be taken in the semester when you expect to graduate. You also cannot perform GTA duties in the same course used for the practicum. That distinction matters when discussing how teaching experience fits around a funded appointment.

The doctorate requires at least two full-time semesters in residence, and dissertation research ordinarily occurs in residence. The proposal, original dissertation and defense add obligations beyond the classroom total. If you need a particular attendance arrangement, discuss it with the school rather than assuming that online graduate courses make the PhD a distance degree.
