The mathematics choices can include such areas as linear algebra, partial differential equations, numerical analysis and statistics. Choose them for the methods needed in the planned specialty, then confirm that the combination satisfies the different-area rule.

The depth options include automatic controls, robotics and kinematics, manufacturing and product realization, energy and transport, and other mechanical areas. Their internal rules are important. The smart-product design depth requires at least two courses from the ME 218 sequence, while the design-methodology route requires the full ME 310 sequence. Course names alone do not establish how many quarters a viable plan will take.

Use Stanford’s laboratory requirement to test the study plan

An approved graduate laboratory component is required within the forty-five-unit degree. The bulletin lists options involving sensors, smart products, mechatronics, collaborative robotics and experimental fluids, among others. Certain approved experimental independent-study arrangements can also satisfy the requirement. Ask what the proposed course actually expects you to build, measure or test and which prerequisites you need first.

For an interest in intelligent machines, connect the laboratory choice with controls and mechanical design instead of treating robotics as a label. Understand what counts toward Stanford’s forty-five quarter units

At least fifteen units must be qualifying mechanical lecture courses. Approved graduate engineering, mathematics and science work brings the technical total to at least thirty-nine units, and six unrestricted electives complete the forty-five-unit degree. The unrestricted allowance can support work outside engineering, but it does not remove the separate technical, depth, breadth or laboratory requirements.

Independent study and seminars have published limits within the technical requirement. Research and seminar credits also do not satisfy the fifteen-unit mechanical lecture requirement. If a faculty project interests you, have the department explain exactly where the credits would count. The non-thesis MSME permits valuable independent work, but it should not be planned as though a research thesis replaces its required coursework.
