Non-thesis students complete forty-two numerically graded credits and at least eighteen advanced ME coursework credits. Approved numerical options include computational mechanical methods, convex optimization, finite elements and applied parallel computing.

Individual course grades must be at least two-point-seven and the cumulative graduation average at least three-point-zero. Electives may come from approved engineering, mathematical, physical and related science areas, subject to the degree’s level and subject rules. Project credits are treated as electives and do not satisfy the advanced ME coursework minimum. Evaluate each proposed course against both its technical purpose and the category it will fill.

UW projects, thesis research and registration

All-coursework study is the default route. The project-based alternative allows up to nine numerically graded credits of approved graduate projects, the Mechatronics Master’s Project or independent study. Faculty approval is needed before students receive registration permission. Projects involving integrated sensing, control and mechanical design also relate to mechatronics programs, while UW’s approved project arrangement determines the actual graduate work.

Thesis students formally select that track and must secure an advisor and proposal approval before registering for ME 700. The department recommends identifying the research topic and advisor before the second quarter ends. Project and independent-study credits do not count toward the thesis degree total, so changing routes after substantial project work can affect completion. Suitable faculty opportunities can be competitive and should be established before a schedule assumes them.

Admission and enrollment in mechanical engineering master’s programs in Washington

The MSME is intended for mechanical or closely related graduates with preparation in mechanics, thermal sciences, systems, manufacturing and design. Applicants from other backgrounds should review the specified mathematics, natural-science and engineering prerequisites. The application includes academic records, a statement of technical interests and goals, and three recommendations. Academic references are preferred, although relevant professional references are acceptable, with English-proficiency evidence required where applicable.

Full-time status ordinarily requires ten credits and may matter for financial aid or immigration requirements. Students without a full-time obligation may take fewer credits. A seminar can help reach the enrollment threshold but does not count toward the forty-two-credit degree, and thesis students may use approved research credits toward full-time status. The department encourages an early study plan to account for courses that may appear only once each year.

UW mechanical MS instructional and quarterly fees

For twenty-twenty-six to twenty-twenty-seven, campus instructional fees are $754 per credit for Washington residents and $1,390 for nonresident and international students. Online students pay $1,390 regardless of residency. At the minimum forty-two credits, the published course-fee estimates are $31,668 for resident campus study and $58,380 for nonresident campus or online study. These are instructional-fee estimates rather than total attendance budgets.

Quarterly charges add registration, facilities, recreation, services and activities, and transit fees. Books, course materials and living expenses are additional, and international students may face further charges. Washington state employee tuition exemption does not apply to this fee-based degree. UW offers its mechanical MS coursework in an online format with full-time and part-time enrollment. Project and thesis supervision must be arranged separately, so their availability should be confirmed for the intended plan.

Do Washington residents receive the resident rate for the online MSME?

No. The published online instructional rate is $1,390 per credit for all residencies in twenty-twenty-six to twenty-twenty-seven. The lower resident rate applies to on-campus instruction.
