  • The thesis route requires at least fifteen ME coursework credits outside thesis; the project and coursework-only routes require at least eighteen ME coursework credits.

  • The department normally expects an ABET mechanical engineering bachelor’s and at least a 3.0 average in the final two years or sixty relevant credits.
  • Applicants from other engineering, mathematics, computing or physical-science fields may be considered after required leveling preparation; the department does not offer conditional admission.
  • The regular application requires GRE scores, three professional recommendations, a statement, CV and transcripts, with applicable English-proficiency evidence. Qualifying UNM BSME applicants have a two-letter exception.

Core study in mechanical engineering master’s programs in New Mexico

The mathematics requirement can be met through approved numerical techniques, computational mechanics or other suitable graduate quantitative courses. Thermal science choices include advanced thermodynamics and theoretical fluid mechanics; solid mechanics choices include advanced mechanics of materials, continuum mechanics and elasticity. Dynamics and controls offers its own approved alternatives, allowing the core to support different intended specialties.

The thesis plan requires at least fifteen mechanical coursework credits outside thesis, while the project and coursework-only plans require at least eighteen mechanical credits. All require at least twenty-four credits at the five-hundred level under their route rules. Outside electives must be technical and approved for a coherent program. A course should support the proposed investigation or specialty as well as satisfy a numerical credit minimum.

UNM’s thesis route has continuing-enrollment obligations

Plan I uses six thesis credits within its thirty-one-credit minimum. Once thesis registration begins, students must continue enrolling in fall and spring until Graduate Studies accepts the thesis. Summer graduation also requires at least one thesis credit. That rule can affect the financial plan when research or revisions continue after the regular lecture courses are finished.

Thesis students should establish the faculty advisor by the beginning of the second semester and form an appropriate committee. The committee includes at least three members, with at least two full-time tenure-stream UNM mechanical faculty. The final work is presented and examined orally before submission. Plan time for committee review, the examination paperwork and revisions, using the research schedule to inform the expected graduation term.

Project routes in mechanical engineering master’s programs in New Mexico

Plan II includes three credits of ME 559 Design Project within thirty-four total credits. The written report must explain the problem, relevant prior work, methods, results and conclusions. The project presentation normally serves as the master’s examination. Students give the committee a complete draft at least three weeks before that presentation, making the review period an explicit part of the final-term schedule.

Plan III replaces the required project with additional coursework and also totals thirty-four credits. Each standard MSME route includes one counted seminar credit and ongoing seminar attendance obligations. The advisor-approved Program of Studies must be submitted before the graduation term under Graduate Studies deadlines.
